Japan Digital Nomad Visa (2024)

Launched in April 2024, Japan's digital nomad visa is one of the strictest in the world. It is designed for high earners who want a mid-term stay without entering the Japanese tax system or seeking long-term residency.

The Hard Numbers

  • Annual Income Requirement: ¥10,000,000 (approx. $68,000 USD)
  • Duration: 6 months maximum
  • Renewal: Cannot be renewed consecutively (must wait 6 months)
  • Nationality Restriction: Must be from a visa-exempt country with a tax treaty with Japan (49 countries).

Tax Implications (The Silver Lining)

Because the visa is strictly capped at 6 months (approx 180 days), holders generally do not trigger tax residency in Japan. You remain a non-resident for tax purposes, meaning your foreign-sourced remote income is not taxed by the Japanese government.

Eligibility & Application

To apply, you must submit the following to your local Japanese embassy or consulate:

  • Proof of ¥10 million annual income (tax returns, bank statements).
  • Proof of private health insurance covering your entire stay in Japan with a minimum coverage of ¥10 million for medical expenses.
  • A detailed explanation of your remote work activities.

Why is it so strict?

Unlike Spain or Portugal, Japan is not using this visa to combat depopulation or attract long-term immigrants. It is categorized under "Specified Activities" purely as an extended tourism visa for high-value spenders who will inject foreign capital into the local economy without competing for local jobs or straining the healthcare system.
